Natalie Portman Still Feels 'Aftershocks' Of 'Black Swan'

'It was the first thing I've ever done that was this physically demanding on top of an emotionally demanding part,' she tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

For as beautiful and ethereal as the world of ballet appears to be, whether via live performance or in movies, Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman have gone to great lengths to shatter that pristine exterior in their new film, "Black Swan," which arrives in theaters Friday. When MTV News caught up with Portman, we asked her what she went through in order to get into her character's dark and disturbing world.

"It was really extreme," Portman said of her physical commitment to the role. "And I definitely felt both physical and mental aftershocks from the experience, because it was the first thing I've ever done that was this physically demanding on top of an emotionally demanding part," she said. "And it's great. I mean, the kind of discipline that it demands also puts you in that space for the acting part. But yeah, it affects you in ways. I'll probably figure out how it affected me in, like, five years. I'll look back and go, 'Oh, that's why I did that and that and that.' "

Portman also said that, although she and Aronofsky first discussed the project nearly a decade ago, she needed more age and experience to tap into certain aspects of her character.

"For me, it's really about someone going from a position, an artistry where you're trying to please other people, to a position where you're finding pleasure yourself," she said. "And Vincent [Cassel]'s character, though it seems that he's sort of puppeteering this character, he is really guiding her towards becoming an artist and is really teaching her how to find her own pleasure and make a true expression of herself, that it's about her."

The 29-year-old went on to say that she related to her character finally realizing that it's not her job to make others happy. "It's about breaking out of a system where you're easily replaceable by the next girl who looks like you. And I feel like my 20s were about that, and probably into my future, I'm sure it'll continue being that way," Portman said. "But the older you get, the less you care about what other people think and the more you just want to be your true self and express your true self."

Check out everything we've got on "Black Swan."

Alicia Keys, Usher and Drake lead the list of nominees for the 2010 Soul Train Awards, it was announced on Monday (October 18).

New mother Keys and Usher are tied for the most nods with four apiece; Keys is up for Best R&B/Soul Artist Female, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year, while Usher is up for Best R&B/Soul Artist Male, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Dance Performance.

Drake is just one nom behind the pace-setters. The Toronto lyricist scored nods in three categories: Best Hip Hop Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year.

Nicki Minaj, Ne-Yo, B.o.B Erykah Badu, Monica, Sade and Fantasia are among the other big nominees, each scoring two nods apiece. This year's Legends Awards recipients are veteran singers Ron Isley and Anita Baker.

R. Kelly is set to open the show, hosted for a second-straight year by actor Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Rick Ross, Cee-Lo and Keyshia Cole are among the acts scheduled to perform. The 2010 Soul Train Awards are set for November 10 at Atlanta's Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and will air November 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BET and Centric.

Last year marked the return of the seminal awards show, founded by "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius, after a two-year hiatus. The 2009 production also took place in Atlanta and featured tributes to Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, L.A. Reid and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds.

'Faster' Star Dwayne Johnson Talks Channeling Clint Eastwood

'I've got one big bullet and I'll put it right between your eyes,' he tells MTV News of throwback action flick.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Dwayne Johnson
Photo: MTV News

Dwayne Johnson started off the year rocking a pink tutu in "Tooth Fairy." He's ending the year, though, in pretty much the exact opposite fashion, kicking ass like we've never seen the former pro wrestler kick ass before.

In "Faster," Johnson stars as an unnamed ex-con on an utterly brutal mission to avenge his brother's decade-old murder. The movie is like a flashy throwback to ultraviolent 1970s films like the Clint Eastwood-starring "Dirty Harry" and Sam Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs." Those flicks, it turns out, were the inspirations for "Faster," which opens Wednesday.

"The movies of the '70s, a lot of Peckinpah movies, Eastwood movies from the '70s, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson — movies like that where they just have that tone and that texture," Johnson told MTV News. "There weren't big explosions for the sake of explosions, so all the action was fueled by an emotion. Not big bazookas or anything like that. I've got one big bullet and I'll put it right between your eyes. It's that type of action."

That's a far cry from January's "Tooth Fairy," in which Johnson played a vicious hockey player magically transformed into a tooth-snatching, cash-bestowing pixie. It's a role that had him squeezing into tights and donning the aforementioned tutu. So, um, which Johnson character — fantastical fulfiller of dreams or cruel destroyer of lives — falls closest to the guy he really is?

The 38-year-old actor says each role has something in common with the other — a trait he also proudly shares. "There is nothing I wouldn't do to protect someone I love," he said.

Check out everything we've got on "Faster."

Britney Spears 'Glee' Episode Draws Record-Setting Ratings

Tribute episode brings in 13.3 million viewers.
By James Dinh

Madonna's "Glee" tribute episode might have been titled "The Power of Madonna," but it was the show's tribute to Britney Spears that reigned supreme. The broadcast, which featured cameos from the pop princess herself, drew 13.3 million viewers, leading the 8 p.m. hour and posting its best-ever rating among adults 18-49.

Tuesday night's episode, appropriately titled "Britney/Brittany," had a 5.8 rating and rose 4 percent from last week's season-two premiere. The feat made history for "Glee," as it becomes the first series since NBC's "Seinfeld" in 1993 to debut as the top series of the week and then spike in ratings the following week, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The episode, which highlighted Heather Morris' character Brittany S. Pearce, revolved around the McKinley High students' fight to perform Britney Spears numbers. Through anesthesia-induced sequences, the Gleeks tapped into their inner pop star to perform renditions of the singer's hits, including " ... Baby One More Time" and "Me Against the Music."

In addition to Spears' appearances on the hit Fox show, the singer took to Twitter during the West Coast premiere to thank fans for campaigning in support of the episode. "I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" she tweeted. The pop princess also gave props to the many song and video re-creations, including "I'm a Slave 4 U," saying, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job."

Spears' manager, Adam Leber, also showed his appreciation for the episode, which spawned multiple trending topics on Twitter. "So glad you guys loved the GLEE episode! The Overwhelming worldwide response has been insane.3 of the top 10 worldwide trending topics.Sick! Big big big thank you to Ryan Murphy, the incredible cast and Brit's fans for making it happen...."

After such success, it wouldn't be surprising if the rumors of a second Spears-devoted episode came true, since "Britney/Brittany" only included hits from the first few years of the singer's career.

Usher Shows Off Fancy Footwork At AMAs

Swedish House Mafia join Ush for an electronic mash-up.

Usher's protégé, Justin Bieber, scored more hardware than the "OMG" singer on Sunday night (November 21) at the 2010 American Music Awards, but the veteran superstar was far from a step behind the teen sensation.

With his fleet footwork, Usher teamed up with dance-world superstars Swedish House Mafia to ignite the stage with a mash-up of his "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and their "Miami 2 Ibiza" and "One" that certainly qualified as one of the evening's high points. Decked out in black military garb and sporting a starter mohawk, Usher partied and pranced around onstage to his club-happy single.

"I feel like a zombie gone back to life," Usher sang. "Hands up, and suddenly we all got our hands up/ No control of my body/ Ain't I seen you before?/ I think I remember those eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes."

Usher and his gang of dancers showed off moves that would have tripped up teen stars. At one point, his backup dancers launched him into the air and Usher landed and jumped right into his next step.

A full explosion followed behind him and he carried the energy into the hook.

" 'Cause baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again," he crooned. "Yeah, baby tonight/ The DJ got us falling in love again/ So dance, dance, like it's the last, last night of your life, life."

After picking up an award earlier in the evening, Usher acknowledged his veteran status. The 32-year-old thanked his supporters, plugged his OMG Tour with Trey Songz and shouted out longtime fans. "I been doing this 18 years," he said.

What did you think about Usher's performance? Tell us in the comments!

'Spider-Man' Star Andrew Garfield Is The Actor We're Most Thankful For In 2010

His Oscar-worthy turn in 'The Social Network,' 'Spider-Man' casting and overall humility have endeared the young actor to MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian

Andrew Garfield
Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic

He plastered an all-too-human face on the backstabby founding of Facebook in "The Social Network" and just might win an Oscar for his troubles. He healed our broken geeky hearts when he assumed the role of Peter Parker after the "Spider-Man" franchise collapsed unexpectedly in January. And let's not forget his powerful performance as a cloned human desperate to prove he has in a soul in the underrated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-winning novel "Never Let Me Go."

For all of these reasons — as well as for being such a damn nice fellow — Andrew Garfield is the man MTV News is most thankful for in 2010.

Just don't tell that to him. Humble as ever despite talk of awards-season love and the prospect of taking on one of pop culture's most beloved superheroes, Garfield has trouble accepting the fact that he's deserving of all the hype. A conversation with him veers through talk of insecurities, I-better-not-screw-this-up fears and the self-consciously naive hope that his life isn't about to change forever.

He is, in other words, an utterly charming guy, and we can't wait to see what he brings to the screen in 2011.

MTV: So every year, we look back at the film folks we're truly thankful for, and this year, you're the man we're most thankful for. Congrats!

Andrew Garfield: Wow, that's stupid. That's very, very silly. I guess if I make you feel better about yourselves, that makes sense.

MTV: We're very insecure.

Garfield: No, I'm very insecure! I'm incredibly insecure. That's crazy, but it's very flattering.

MTV: Do you have a speech prepared for the occasion?

Garfield: Yes, I would like to, first and foremost, thank you for inflating my ego. I really only want to thank you.

MTV: It's been quite a year for you, with "Never Let Me Go" and then "Social Network" and then you obviously landed "Spider-Man." Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you?

Garfield: I feel incredibly lucky that I've had the good fortune to work with people and on projects I care about. From "Never Let Me Go" to "I'm Here," a short film I did with Spike Jonze, to the David Fincher thing, "The Social Network," with all the casts and crews — I don't take that lightly. It's inspiring, and you feed off it. In that way, I'm incredibly happy. And moving on to the next job I'm going to be shooting, being given that responsibility, I see it as a real gift. It's a character — I'm talking about the Spider-person — I've known for my whole life. He's been a presence in my upbringing and a very symbolic figure and force of manhood and bravery and a moral compass. All of those things that have shaped me as a person, he's been very much involved in.

MTV: It seems like maybe you were fairly well known in the U.K., but until recently, not many people in the U.S. knew who you were. How has your day-to-day life changed, if at all?

Garfield: It hasn't changed yet. I say "yet" as if that will happen. Maybe naively, I think my life is going to stay the same in terms of anonymity. I feel it's so important to have a normal life, to be able to walk down a city street and have a normal human experience in order to reflect that in the work. Otherwise, you can't relate. It's so funny how actors are perceived. It's craziness. Even the way I got when I met Doc Brown the other day. What's his name?

MTV: Christopher Lloyd from "Back to the Future"?

Garfield: Yeah, I met Christopher Lloyd. I lost my mind. I turned into a schoolgirl. I started screaming in his face. I went insane. But I guess because his performances had such a profound effect on me, it was like meeting a hero. I personally haven't been on the receiving end of that, thankfully.

MTV: Well, people aren't probably walking around shouting at you, "Hey, Eduardo," your character from "Social Network," but you'll probably be getting a lot of, "Hey, Peter Parker!"

Garfield: Unless they let me play Peter Parker with a disguise so no one sees my face. I'll play him with a beard and mustache.

MTV: Maybe a little "Benjamin Button"-style CGI facial work ...

Garfield: Yeah, they could face-replace me, and then it'll just be my body. People will recognize some other, better actor's face.

MTV: You should bring that up with Sony.

Garfield: You think they'll like it?

MTV: Totally. ... I mean, not a chance. Anyway, has there been a surreal moment from 2010 that kind of encapsulates what a crazy year it's been for you?

Garfield: I did have a strange moment when I was told I was going to play this role. I was like, "Oh, wow, this is something I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid." There was a moment of total boyish excitement. It was this cosmic convergence where I was in the past, present and future all at once. In the future, I was thinking about my nephews that are going to have an uncle who's Spider-Man, but then I thought that could be bad because kids can bully you for any reason, and it's like, "Where's your uncle now when I'm beating the sh-- out of you?" I'll have to go to their school a lot, but by that time I'll be really old and fat and no one will believe I was Spider-Man. Then I was thinking about the past and when I was first shown a "Spider-Man" comic. It inspired me because I was one of those people who felt stronger on the inside than they looked on the outside. And then in the present moment, I was thinking this moment is something I'll never forget.

Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it's about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long.

Check out everything we've got on "The Social Network" and "Spider-Man."

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers

'I've listened to their music since I was a child,' says the R&B diva, who recorded 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

Mary J. Blige

You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.

In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven," working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.

But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.

"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."

Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.

"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.

Beyonce Laughs Off Heat Commercial Controversy

'It upped my sales,' she tells 'The View' after her perfume ad was banned in the U.K.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé in her ad for Heat

Beyoncé caused a bit of controversy last week with her red-hot commercial for her latest fragrance, Heat. The ad was banned from daytime rotation in the U.K. thanks to its steamy images of Beyoncé. When the singer and her mom, Tina Knowles, stopped by "The View" on Monday (November 22), she seemed happy about the outcome.

"I think it was very good, because a lot of people went and watched the commercial," she said. "And it upped my sales."

Beyoncé not only had a good-natured laugh about the response to her ad, but she also poked fun at her ever-present wind machine, explaining why she seems to always have one on hand during her performances. "Where's the wind coming from? It started out only [to stay cool], and then it kind of created this effect with my hair," she explained. "You can only imagine, the show is two and a half hours. It's really, really warm onstage."

While B didn't dish about life with her hubby, Jay-Z, she did reveal that she's a bit messy at home, despite being so together when she hits the red carpet. "Well, I think because I work really hard," she said. "When I'm home, I don't want to think about it."

Beyoncé seemed a bit more comfortable when it came to giving a shout-out to Jay-Z for making an appearance on her concert special, "I Am ... World Tour," which premieres on Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC. She recounted how Hova surprised the audience by joining her onstage in Rio de Janeiro. "We talked about it; we knew he was in town," she said. "Kanye, as well. He was in town that night."

'King's Speech' Star Colin Firth Talks Awards-Season Love And 'Dumb Luck'

2010 best actor nominee looks poised for another Oscar nod.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Colin Firth in "The King's Speech"
Photo: The Weinstein Company

For the second year in a row, Colin Firth finds himself at the center of awards-season chatter. And after losing out on a best actor Oscar for "A Single Man," the 50-year-old actor has again established himself as one of the frontrunners in that category, thanks to his turn as the stammer-afflicted King George VI on the verge of Britain's entry into World War II in "The King's Speech."

It seems Firth is an actor at the top of his game, but to hear him tell it, it's as much a matter of good fortune as it is great talent.

"It's just dumb luck," he told MTV News at the Toronto film festival in September. "That's all: Just getting a crack at it. Sometimes you just take roles to stay in the game or pay bills and hope the good ones are going to come along.

"I was never in a world of perfect choice, and now I feel like I've had a couple of real plums landing in my hand," he added.

It was at fall film festivals in Toronto and Telluride, Colorado, as critics first began to catch screenings of "King's Speech," that it became clear we'd still be talking about Firth's performance come awards season. He's been faithfully making the publicity rounds ever since, and as he told us when we chatted earlier this month in New York, he's not bored with the experience.

"Funnily enough, I find it easier than many things," he said. "There are so many angles you can approach it from, to do with the way people are reacting to it to the surprises we've had along the way to nuances about the actual history itself. I think this has a lot of mileage in it.

"It's been very gratifying for audiences to have howls of laughter and be open to crying," he continued. "To see that happening in the same film is a triumphant feeling. When you're in Telluride, you can put it down to altitude — one glass of wine amounts to 10. So we had to test it at sea level as well to see if people enjoyed it, and they did."

Janet Jackson Has Drake, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga On Her iPod

Her 'For Colored Girls' co-stars also share their musical faves, in Mixtape Daily.

Celebrity Favorites: Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise and Thandie Newton

Although the ladies of Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls" had to embrace pain and confront harsh realities to channel the characters in the movie script, from an adaptation of playwright Ntozake Shange's 1974 Broadway hit "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf," offscreen, the cast was as cool as Janet Jackson's character in the film.

"She's someone who has no time for niceties, really," Jackson told MTV News of her role. "That was a tough thing for me, to drop the 'please' and the 'thank you,' just trying to get into the role, get into her head and doing that at home and in my world, that was kind of tough, but eventually it happened. [Laughs.] She has her walls up, for sure."

OK, maybe the lovely ladies of Perry's film weren't that cool. But when the camera wasn't rolling, Jackson, Kimberly Elise and Thandie Newton spent plenty of time listening to music.

"I enjoy listening to Drake, I enjoy listening to Bruno Mars," Jackson revealed. "I enjoy listening to Gaga."

"I love Citizen Cope," Elise added. "Anything Citizen Cope-y. I like Matt and Kim; they're different."

Newton noted a track from Amos Lee's discography, "Long Line of Pain," from the blues singer's Supply and Demand album, as a song she kept loaded in her iPod during filming.

"I'm a huge fan of TV on the Radio," Newton said. "A bit of Afro-Punk. I like a bit of Amos Lee, one of his songs, 'Long Line of Pain,' really reminded me of the movie. That was a part of my 'For Colored Girls' playlist. How we can inherit pain unless we intercept the cycle. We're just passing it forward. Thank you, Amos Lee."

Britney Spears 'Glee' Episode Draws Record-Setting Ratings

Tribute episode brings in 13.3 million viewers.

Jay-Z Talks Tupac, Beyonce During Charlie Rose Interview

Rapper chides veteran talk-show host for mispronouncing Tupac's name.

BROOKLYN, New YorkJay-Z's new book, "Decoded," may be about translating the lyrics in his songs, but when the iconic MC sat down with talk-show host Charlie Rose, he promised to "decode" everything.

Rose interviewed the rapper on Thursday before an audience at the Brooklyn Museum for a future episode of his PBS program, and the pair touched on much more than music.

With Beyoncé, his mother and other family members seated in the front row, Jay-Z held court on an array of topics, including Tupac Shakur, his arrest for stabbing a record executive and his drug-dealing past.

"Did you ever do the drugs?" Rose asked the Roc Nation boss.

"Crack cocaine," Jay responded, drawing laughs from the audience. "C'mon, man. That's hard-core, man. Maybe a little weed. A Ballantine Ale. Or a Guinness Stout."

"Decoded," Jay-Z's first book, is part memoir and part deconstruction of his lyrics, which have helped to garner more #1 albums than any solo artist in history.

Sporting a gray blazer, black v-neck sweater, dark denim jeans and designer kicks, Jay-Z was casual and charismatic throughout the evening.

When Rose mispronounced Tupac's name, the rapper humorously chided the talk-show host.

"If it was Tupac," Jay said, pronouncing it "two-pack" and pausing to let the laughter build up, "it would be spelled with a 'k' and not a 'c' at the end. You're not the first to say it wrong, but hopefully, after tonight, you'll be the last." The veteran journalist redeemed himself when he leaned over to give Jay-Z a fist pound, signifying that he had learned his lesson.

Rose probed further into the "Run This Town" star's life, at one point asking about his arrest in the stabbing of former Biggie confidant Lance "Un" Rivera.

"He was stabbed, but he went home without taking an aspirin," Jay responded, defusing the headlines of the past. "He was fine. Don't feel bad for him."

As the conversation neared its end, Rose brought up the guarded rapper's marriage to singer Beyoncé. He pointed to a clip of the two from the video for "O3 Bonnie and Clyde," but Jay chimed in before Rose could ask his question.

"I don't know how I let her wear that Boston hat," Jay-Z said. "She took the B a little too far. That's what I thought of.

"How did I get out of that," he joked, after Rose was flustered and forgot his question.

As of press time, the broadcast date for the episode of "Charlie Rose" featuring Jay-Z had not been announced.

Justin Bieber Explains Michael Jackson AMA Shout-Out

'Michael's not your dad or anything,' singer laughs, clarifying statement that 'without Michael Jackson, none of us would be here.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

Justin Bieber had a great night at Sunday's American Music Awards. Not only did he perform his inspirational new track, "Pray," at the big show, but he also walked away with four awards, including Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Album for My World 2.0, Artist of the Year and T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist.

But Bieber's shout-out to Michael Jackson left some viewers confused: Taking the stage to collect one of his trophies, he said, "Without Michael Jackson, none of us would be here." When MTV News caught up with the superstar later in the night, he laughed off the somewhat misleading comment.

"You know, I said, 'Without Michael we wouldn't have been here,' but we would be here, but music wouldn't be the same," he explained. "I want to clarify that you'd still be born. Michael's not your dad or anything. You'd still be here. He's not your father."

Bieber may be here without Michael Jackson, but he says that he really wouldn't be here without his fans. "I think that my fans have been such a supporting factor that, I mean, I couldn't be doing this without them, so this has just been amazing," he explained. "I owe it all to my fans, my family, my friends."

Bieber says that his dad is equally impressed by what the 16-year-old has accomplished. "He was just telling me how proud he was. I'm Canadian, so he was like, it's like when he sees a hockey team score a goal and he jumps out of his seat," he said. "He's like, 'Yes! That's my boy.' So it was great."

Naya Rivera Wanted To 'Be Like Paris Hilton,' On 'When I Was 17'

'Glee' star recalls getting her dad to spring for an expensive Hilton-inspired dog on episode premiering Saturday at 11 a.m.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

When "Glee" star Naya Rivera was a teen she didn't just look up to one of the most popular girls in her high school, she admired one of the most popular girls in the world: Paris Hilton.

"All I wanted to do was be like Paris Hilton," she says in the latest episode of "When I Was 17," which also features stories from Taye Diggs and Carmelo Anthony. Rivera, who was 17 in 2004, had a major Hilton obsession when she was a teen.

"Everything that Paris did, Naya was all about it," her friend Alyson said.

Any good Hilton fan in the mid-aughties had to have an appropriately small pooch to tote around. So Rivera persuaded her father to buy her a socialite-approved pup.

"That's when I bought a little dog like Paris. So I convinced my dad to get me a Maltese," she says. "I called around, like, to a million breeders. Oddly enough, this lady that I found was like, 'Oh, yeah, I just sold Paris Hilton a dog.' And I was like, 'Yahtzee! I want my dog from there.' "

However, it turns out that cute, clutch-sized canines don't come cheap and getting one from the same breeder as Hilton came with a hefty price tag.

"The dog was, like, $1,500, so we had a payment plan for this dog. We literally made monthly payments on the dog," she recalls. "Her name is Cali. I took it everywhere with me."

After a while, though, carrying around an adorable dog, even one that Hilton may have dubbed "hot," got old.

"It was cool for like three months then it crapped in my car," Rivera concedes.

"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Naya Rivera, Camelo Anthony and Taye Diggs — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV

Ke$ha: Outcast Icon And Unlikeliest Of Comeback Stories

'We R Who We R' singer fended off haters and ascended to pop-star status by sticking to her guns, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Ke$ha
Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage

MADRID Ke$ha is sitting on a stool deep inside the cavernous, white-tiled guts of Madrid's Caja Magica, a sparkling, vaguely "THX 1183"-y complex that was built for tennis tournaments and the city's pro basketball team, but on this night is playing host to the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards.

She is dressed like an extra from an old Busta Rhymes video — think "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" — covered in neon fishnets and DayGlo body paint, bright-yellow false lashes leaping a good 3 inches off her lids. She's holding a plastic cup filled with what she describes as "apple juice" (but which smells very much like whiskey) and waving to no one in particular, spilling some of that juice on the tile floor with each wild gesture. No one seems to mind.

She is smiling like crazy, and whenever she does, you catch a glimpse of her gold-capped tooth, a rather inspired — if slightly anachronistic — bit of flair that flies in the face of modern dentistry and sort of makes her look like a pirate. I think about bringing this up, but I don't because at the moment, Ke$ha appears to be incredibly, unbelievably happy, which may have something to do with the apple juice or the fact that she's just bested the likes of Justin Bieber and B.o.B for the Best New Act award, the first thing she's won, she tells me, since being voted "most likely to become a serial killer" in high school.

That statement is somewhat fitting because, much like everything else in this scene — the slightly drunk, glow-in-the-dark pop star; the oddly sterile confines of the Caja Magica; the gold tooth — it doesn't make an ounce of sense. But then I realize that nothing about Ke$ha makes much sense these days because somehow, in spite of her countless doubters and detractors, she has managed to become an actual pop star. Not just the kind who sells lots of albums but, like Lady Gaga and Madonna, the kind that wields tremendous influence and even manages to use some of her power for good.

She has undergone perhaps the most unlikely of transformations in recent history, morphing from a hard-partying pop oddity into an actual icon, a champion for those on the fringes of society, a hero to outcasts around the world. And, much like everything in her rather bizarre career, she's done it without really trying at all.

And yes, I am aware that she is still the same girl who wears garbage bags to award shows and claims to be psychic and even has a song on her new Cannibal album called "C U Next Tuesday," but there's no denying that, right now, Ke$ha is on an upswing, both professionally and personally. "We R Who We R," the first single from Cannibal, not only debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but has also become an outcast anthem, which, as she told Entertainment Weekly, was precisely the reason she wrote it.

Moreover, she won that EMA — voted on by fans, which means she outgunned the Beliebers of the world to get it — and will launch a North American tour early next year. More important, even former adversaries like Perez Hilton seem to have nothing but good things to say about her these days. It may not be a stretch to say that, at this very moment, everybody loves Ke$ha.

And, yet, she is seemingly the exact same person who bombed on "Saturday Night Live" and had amassed so many haters that she was compelled to address the issue in an interview with me earlier this year. Nothing about her has changed — quite the opposite, in fact — and yet, by simply sticking to her guns, Ke$ha has won. I am not exactly sure how this happened, but she has staged an improbable comeback without any of the pitfalls that usually precede an improbable comeback; no rehab, shaving her head, attacking an SUV with an umbrella, etc.

And, in the process, she's not only answered her critics, but she's proven that she's no one-hit wonder. Ke$ha's already on to her second act and she'll probably have a third and fourth too.

It is the unlikeliest of developments, and yet, it is happening right now. Either we, as a society, have come full circle — to the point where we no longer criticize those who dare stray outside the norm — or Ke$ha has single-handedly shifted the entire paradigm ... by doing nothing at all. Either way, I can't explain it, but I wonder if Ke$ha can. So, as our interview begins, I ask her if she's aware that she has suddenly become everyone's favorite pop star. Turns out she is, although, like everyone else, she seems to be mystified as to why.

"I was under the assumption that everyone hated me, for a long time, and then I stopped going on the Internet. And since then, about six months ago, apparently people have started liking me," she laughs. "I have no idea why. ... I hope it continues, because I'm not innately a douche bag, I don't think — maybe I am — so hopefully people are starting to see that. I like to do stupid sh-- sometimes, but I'm not mean or a douche."

As she says it, I realize it doesn't make any sense at all. No one ever accused Ke$ha of being a douche bag (or of being mean). But it hardly matters. In fact, her statement is oddly perfect. It's impossible to figure out what's happening with Ke$ha these days, but it's never been better. She'll keep dressing up in DayGlo outfits and drinking apple juice. She'll continue doing "stupid sh--," and we'll all try our best to keep up. Traditionally, these things usually don't happen this way, but then again, nothing about Ke$ha is traditional. At all.

What is it about Ke$ha? If you've recently come around, tell us why in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Katy Perry Pick Up Platinum Certifications

Releases by Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, B.o.B, Bruno Mars also recognized by recording-industry organization RIAA.
By James Montgomery

On Wednesday, the Recording Industry Association of America handed out their latest round of gold and platinum certifications ... and if your name was Ke$ha or Justin Bieber, well, then it was a very good day for you.

Ke$ha's Animal was certified gold (meaning it passed the 500,000-sales mark) and a spate of her digital singles went multiplatinum, with "Tik Tok" being downloaded more than 5 million times and "Your Love Is My Drug" racking up another 2 million. "Blah Blah Blah" and "Take It Off" both were certified gold, meaning that, all told, she's sold more than 8.5 million downloads to date.

Bieber earned his first-ever multiplatinum award, as the RIAA certified sales of his My World 2.0 album at more than 2 million copies. "Baby," his team-up with Ludacris, also was certified as double platinum.

Wednesday also was a great day to be the Black Eyed Peas, as their massive tune "I Gotta Feeling" was certified 6-times platinum (that's more than 6 million downloads) — making it the RIAA's highest-ever digital-song certification.

Following (somewhat) close behind the Peas were the likes of Katy Perry, B.o.B, Taio Cruz and Rihanna, who had their respective mega singles "California Gurls," "Airplanes," "Break Your Heart" and "Don't Stop the Music" certified as triple platinum. Perry and Rihanna also each picked up a double-platinum certification — for "Teenage Dream" and "Rude Boy," respectively — bringing their total hauls to more than 5 million units sold.

The Bruno Mars track "Just the Way You Are" was certified platinum, giving the crooner his very first solo plaque. B.o.B's "Magic" and former "American Idol" champ Kris Allen's "Live Like We're Dying" also picked up platinum certifications.
