Usher Says New 'Rev Pop' Project Is A 'Movement'

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like 'Yeah!' and 'OMG.'
By James Montgomery

Usher
Photo: MTV News

With the success of songs like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," "Hot Tottie" and "OMG," Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement."

It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now.

"I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

"It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev."

Usher wouldn't say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they're going to be impressed ... if not a little shocked.

"Stay alive," he smiled, "Because you're definitely going to be in for a surprise."

Britney Spears Drops Official 'Till The World Ends' Remix

New track with Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha follows leaked version, plus Brit tweets single's cover art.
By Jocelyn Vena

The "Till the World Ends" Femme Fatale remix
Photo: Jive

Just days after it was leaked on Friday, Britney Spears and her femme fatales, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, dropped their official remix of "Till the World Ends."

The new version of the song was produced by Dr. Luke and Dream Machine. Brit half-whispers " 'Till the World Ends' remix" before the beat kicks in and Nicki hits her verse hard. She spits fierce lines like, "Sniff, sniff, cries/ I done slayed your whole entire f---ing life."

Then Britney's sex-kitten vocals kick in for the song's first verse. "That's Britney, bitch! I'm Nicki Minaj and that's Ke$ha," the Queens MC declares before K sings the chorus. The beat is harder, the loops are sassier and the song is grimier than the original version, which was the second single from Femme Fatale. The newly added dubstep portion takes the one from "Hold It Against Me" to a new level by adding in bass-heavy synths.

Ke$ha, of course, wrote the track for Britney, and the ladies certainly don't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with each other. The official track isn't much different than the version that leaked over the weekend, though Spears did have something brand-new to share with her fans just as the song dropped on iTunes and streamed on her website.

Spears tweeted the artwork for the single, which features the original press photo of Spears along with separate photos of Nicki on the left and Ke$ha on the right. Spears wrote, "@NickiMinaj @Keshasuxx Too much fierceness for one cover! Thanks for lending your voices girls... #TTWEREMIX — Brit"

Spears and Minaj have been hanging out a lot in the lead-up to their summer tour. They hung out at the Factory nightclub on Friday night after Minaj's show in Los Angeles. Spears later wrote, "Early rehearsal after a late night with my girl @NickiMinaj. Can't WAIT to get out on the road with you."

What do you think of the "Till the World Ends" remix? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber Plants Kiss On Selena Gomez On VMA Pre-Show

Although MTV News' Sway Calloway has enough interview experience to get the goods from the biggest and brightest stars, our special VMA Pre-Show co-host Selena Gomez proved to be just as skilled as our season pro when her interview subject was boyfriend Justin Bieber

"I'm here with the one-and-only Justin Bieber," Gomez said when she introduced the singer with a smile. "Who are you wearing? Can you please talk about that?"

"I have my snake," Bieber said, displaying a live pet reptile in his hand. "I have red pants and cheetah shoes."

"What's your snake's name?" Gomez expertly followed up.

"My snake's name is Johnson," Bieber responded.

"You're up for Best Male Video," Gomez continued. "I wanna know — you're up against Eminem and Bruno Mars — do you feel a little nervous at all?"

"You know, I'm just excited to be in the category with such amazing people," Bieber said of his fellow nominees. "I'm just happy to be here."

"Rumored to be performing is Jay-Z and Kanye [West], and I know you like them both," Gomez continued, adding a bit of her Bieber expertise to the conversation. "Are you excited to see them perform?"

"Very excited," Bieber said. "I heard that it was kind of a last minute thing, but I'm really excited."

Gomez, again relying upon her insider Bieber knowledge, prodded Bieber further, asking if he was more excited for Jay-Z and Kanye West, or another of his favorites, Beyoncé.

"I'm excited to see Beyoncé too," Bieber said with a grin.

"Good," Gomez said, clearly pleased with their work. "Thank you so much. Thank you for hanging out, babe," she said to Bieber, as the "Baby" singer leaned in to plant a sweet kiss on Gomez's cheek.

'Avengers' Star Tom Hiddleston Teases 'Shady Deals'

His Loki, from the 'Thor' universe, 'intends to rule the human race as their king,' Hiddleston tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Judging from the overwhelmingly positive response to the "Avengers" footage screened at Disney's D23 convention over the weekend, the film's marketing and PR teams are doing a bang-up job of keeping the buzz building for the highly anticipated summer 2012 film.

The actors are doing a fine job as well, given the fact that they can't ever reveal too much about the plot. When MTV News caught up with the actor behind the film's master of mischief, "Thor" star Tom Hiddleston, we asked him what kind of villainy Loki will be up to in his second big-screen appearance.

"He's the god of mischief and the god of menace," Hiddleston said. "He's still complicated. He's still motivated by this tragic jealousy of Thor and the fact he doesn't have a place in the universe, the sort of awful history of his genealogy."

The Englishman added that jealousy is a key emotional motivator for the complex character.

"It's making him evolve. That jealousy has made him more self-possessed," Hiddleston said. "He knows who he is. He knows what his powers are. So he's definitively more menacing, but it's still motivated by this awful spiritual desolation," he explained.

"Out of that, he's come to the Earth and he intends to rule the human race as their king," he continued. "He thinks — like all the delusional autocrats of history — he thinks that absolute power will get him self-respect."

But it's not all about being dark and brooding, Hiddleston assured us. "He has a lot more fun too," he said, before impressing us with a pretty spot-on impression of his "Avengers" director, Joss Whedon. "Joss Whedon's perpetual note to me is: 'Tom, more feral, more unpredictable, and enjoy yourself.' "

In addition to his impressionist skills, Hiddleston teased that Loki won't be making mischief all by himself. "He's made some shady deals. That's what I'm allowed to tell you," he said. "In the footage [screened at D23], there is a line where I say to Iron Man, Robert Downey, 'I have an army,' and that's definitely true," he promised. "I have amassed an army to help me subjugate the earth."

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

Beyonce Throws Trailer Park 'Party' In New Music Video

Singer was spotted filming clip in a mobile-home park in New Jersey.
By Jocelyn Vena

We got to see how Beyoncé would "Run the World (Girls)" in her post-apocalyptic video for the song, and then we attended her wedding in "Best Thing I Never Had." Now Queen B is throwing a "Party" in her latest video, and lucky for us, we're all invited.

According to reports, Beyoncé headed to New Jersey to shoot the video. ThatGrapejuice.net reported that Beyoncé was hanging with little sister Solange and former Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland and was spotted wearing a fur jacket on set. The song also features Andre 3000, though he wasn't seen at the shoot.

Rapup.com further reported that the shoot took place at South Brunswick's Oakdale Mobile Home Park. The site posted photos of Beyoncé from the set in which she wearing a black dress and little black pillbox hat while being driven around in a golf cart. An old-school red muscle car was also spotted on set.

Local website Mycentraljersey.com spoke to some of the area's residents. "I wasn't expecting this," Bill Flaherty told the site. "There's a lot of good-looking young girls. I'm impressed by the artists doing the painting on the side of the trailer. This is not something that happens every day."

The video shows some of the area's charm, and a number of locals were used as extras in the clip. "We had a call last night to be here by 8 a.m.," the mother of Monica Singleton, an extra in the video, said.

Beyoncé is very busy locking down several videos off her album 4. Videostatic.com reported that Adria Petty, who worked with Beyoncé on her trippy "Sweet Dreams" video, will also work on her "Countdown" clip.

MTV News' request for comment from Beyoncé's camp had not been answered as of press time.

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Nude Statue Gets New Home

Rep for artist Daniel Edwards says life-size piece will be on display at Dallas-area porn shop.
By Jocelyn Vena

Daniel Edwards' headline-making nude statue of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez has found a new home. The life-size statue of the two teen stars will make its way to a Dallas-area porn shop in the very near future, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The shop, New Fine Arts, confirmed to the site that the statue will be on display there. Cory Allen, a rep for Edwards, also told The Reporter that the artist is planning a companion piece inspired by a 1968 cast made of Jimi Hendrix's private parts. The second statue will display Bieber's in the same way, using what he described as a "Warner Bros. cartoon" vibe.

So, why has Edwards decided to focus his attention on the sexualization of Bieber, 17, and Gomez, 19? The artist explained why to MTV News this week.

"I tried to find my entry into making a comment on that very thing that happens time and again to teenage celebrities, where they're kind of exploited early, earlier than what is legal, and the media fuels that as best they can," he said. "I guess I'm making my commentary about that particular thing that happens."

The statue also comments on the "double standard" for males and females in the industry. "It only seems to hit the young ladies a lot worse than the men. It's still there. You see all those beach photos of the two of them. My children are young, but I think I would be freaked out if I saw images of them like that on the Internet."

What do you think of the artist's statue? Let us know in the comments below.

Katy Perry Closing In On Michael Jackson's #1 Singles Record

If 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' tops Hot 100, Perry's Teenage Dream will tie MJ's mark of five #1s from a single album.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry's unstoppable Teenage Dream album continues to churn out hits ... and now, it might just make history too.

If Dream's fifth single, the just-released "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", continues its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at #4, jumping 27 spots from last week), Perry will not only become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off one album, she'll be the first artist of any gender to accomplish the feat since Michael Jackson had five chart-topping singles off his Bad album in 1987 and 1988.

Perry's previous #1s from the Dream album are, of course, "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T." Jackson's five #1s from the Bad album are "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."

Perry has already shattered the Hot 100 record for most consecutive weeks with a single inside the Top 10 (48, a number previously held by Swedish popmeisters Ace of Base), then kept that momentum going by spending an entire year in the chart's upper echelon. More incredibly, that streak is still active, as two of Perry's singles — "T.G.I.F." and "E.T." — sit at numbers 4 and 5, respectively.

What's more, "T.G.I.F" currently sits atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and may soon be her sixth single to pass the 4 million mark in digital sales, joining "E.T.," "California Gurls," "Firework," and from her One of the Boys album, "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl." No other artist has even had four songs pass the 4 million download mark ... Perry's closest competitors in that regard are Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom have had three 4 million-sellers.

What do you think of Katy Perry's chart streak? Sound off in the comments!

'True Blood' Star Warns Of The Curse Of 'The Caller'

Stephen Moyer and director Matthew Parkhill recall the eerie occurrences on the film's Puerto Rico set.
By Josh Wigler

Stephen Moyer in "The Caller"
Photo: Samuel Goldwyn Films

There are probably stranger, scarier things in the universe than a mystery woman from the past who can cross the space-time continuum to obsessively call your home telephone for hours and days and weeks on end. But the idea is plenty creepy as the premise of "The Caller," director Matthew Parkhill's indie thriller starring "Twilight" villainess Rachelle Lefevre and "True Blood" vamp Stephen Moyer.

In "The Caller," Puerto Rico resident Mary Kee (Lefevre) moves into a new home following a nasty separation from her abusive husband ("Eureka's" Ed Quinn), only to find an even more harrowing nemesis in Rose (Lorna Raver), an unhinged and disgruntled woman living in the late 1970s. Rose somehow has the ability to call Mary's new phone number some 30 years into the future, a seemingly impossible sci-fi feat that leaves our protagonist skeptical, frustrated and frightened in turns. When Mary's patience for Rose's hysteria wears thin, she learns the hard lesson that scorning a deranged woman who lives in the past can be hazardous for your health.

Though it boasts a sinister plot, it was actually the behind-the-scenes mysteries that raised the hair on the backs of the "Caller" cast and crew's necks throughout the film's 23-day shoot.

"Sometimes a shoot will take on its own energy," Moyer, who plays Mary's love interest and resident time-travel expert John Guidi, told MTV News. "Every day, something was happening. Things were breaking, film missing, scratches on necks ... it just became this regular occurrence. Even after I left the shoot, me and Matthew and Rachelle would speak regularly, and there would be bits and pieces happening on a regular basis: phone calls coming in from people, literally prank phone calls. It was an odd, odd thing."

Parkhill said that screenwriter Sergio Casci was convinced there was a "curse of 'The Caller.' " But the director doesn't much believe in curses himself, though even he admitted to "weird" and "unsettling" occurrences.

"We dressed Mary's living room with these old National Geographic magazines, and one of them fell open to this page where there were three corpses hanging in this old room, that were identical to the three corpses hanging in our pantry," said Parkhill, referring to a trio of bodies that play a pivotal role in the horror film. "Then when we were shooting in a supermarket, we moved one of the supermarket shelves and there was an old bottle of perfume that had cracked which was labeled 'Rose,' which is [the name of the film's villain]."

In the end, none of these eerie events was powerful enough to derail production on "The Caller," which opens in limited release on Friday (August 26). But that doesn't mean that the alleged curse of "The Caller" doesn't still rear its head from time to time. The press junket held in San Juan earlier this week just so happened to coincide with the presence of Hurricane Irene in Puerto Rico, a threat that is now storming its way up the East Coast. As a result of the storm, certain parts of Puerto Rico — including the hotel that housed the "Caller" cast and crew for the week — were left almost entirely without power for multiple days.

"It feels particularly fitting that we're in the middle of a hurricane," Moyer told MTV with a grin. "There's no power. Last night, after we all left the bar, we had to go back to [our rooms] with flashlights. It's literally pitch black in the hotel. You've just watched a horror film, which is pretty scary, and you're going into your room with a flashlight and you can't see anything. I think all of us went through some moments last night thinking, 'This is it. My time is up! Somebody's going to jump out of the cupboard!' "

Check out everything we've got on "The Caller."

Adele, Katy Perry Will Win Big At VMAs, Experts Predict

Both could end up with multiple Moonmen on Sunday, according to music journalists.
By Gil Kaufman

Katy Perry
Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images

You can always count on outrageous entrances, pimped out red (or white, or black) carpets and plenty of over-the-top performances at the VMAs. But until that envelope is cracked open and the name is called, nobody really knows who is going to take home those Moonmen during the broadcast. (And no, just because we work at MTV doesn't mean we're in on the winners' list.)

As the anticipation builds for Sunday night, we asked a couple of professional pop-culture junkies to help us predict the VMA class of 2011 using a complicated system of ... oh, let's face it, they were guessing just like the rest of us. (For a more mathematical approach, find out what Vegas oddsmakers predict for the VMAs.)

Video of the Year
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise"
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Tyler, the Creator, "Yonkers"

Ian Drew, Senior Music Editor, Us Weekly : "Adele will win. I think it was her year, and this will cement that she is the new face of the music industry."

Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly : "This seems like a really tough one. Adele has a lot of nominations, but I don't ever feel like there was any excitement for that video. ... I would think this would go to Katy, though it's not her most iconic video. It's her message video, and it's a clip that people talked about, and it has a lot of fireworks in it. Who could say no to that?"

Best New Artist
Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown), "My Last"
Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
Kreayshawn, "Gucci Gucci"
Tyler, the Creator, "Yonkers"
Wiz Khalifa, "Black and Yellow"

Drew: "I think it's Foster the People's breakout year. This is a way to honor this band that is bubbling up and taking over. They're kind of this year's Kings of Leon, because everyone is talking about them."

Anderson: "It's kind of weird that Foster the People are in there, but they seem to be peaking now, and they've had a slow burn. But this seems to be where they give Tyler the Moonman, even though I think the buzz around Odd Future has cooled off. ... Of all these videos, when Tyler's premiered everyone talked about it and he seems self-promotional enough and enough of a lightning rod [to make for good TV]. Plus, it's hard to get that image of him playing with the cockroach out of my head."

Best Pop Video
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends"
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), "Give Me Everything"

Drew: "I'll give this one to Katy, because I think Adele will take Video of the Year, and they'll want to give Katy something big and honor her for a slew of amazing videos. This one is the best; it's so poppy and high-concept. Katy's videos are a throwback to the great art of video making, while Adele's is very simple."

Anderson: "There's a lot of heavy hitters and, again, I would like to hand something shiny to Adele, but I don't think of 'Rolling' as a pop song in the way the rest of them are. I'm a real sucker for Katy Perry, and I think the 'Friday' video is kind of awesome. It's big and colorful, and she's clearly into it and trying very hard. It's a definitive statement of who she is and the year she's had. Plus, any time you can get a Rebecca Black cameo in there ..."

Best Rock Video
Cage the Elephant, "Shake Me Down"
Foo Fighters, "Walk"
Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
Mumford & Sons, "The Cave"
The Black Keys, "Howlin' For You"

Drew: "I have a feeling Foster will take Best New Artist, and this was the year of Mumford & Sons, so maybe this is the place to honor them. They had a high-concept video as well, but they could want to honor the veteran Foo Fighters because they did another one of their comedic, hilarious tongue-in-cheek videos."

Anderson: "I'm not a big Mumford fan, but I like that video because mopeds are funny. I think the win will go to the Foo Fighters, though. They've done parodies before, but it's such a strange choice to pick 'Falling Down' as an inspiration, and in a weird way it works. It's a movie about white-people problems, and there's no better middle-age white-people problems band than the Foo Fighters. It's the best song on that record, too, and it reminds of why that band is so great."

Best Video With a Message
Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie"
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
Pink, "F----- Perfect"
Rise Against, "Make It Stop (September's Children)"
Taylor Swift, "Mean"

Drew: "I think it's clearly Lady Gaga. There hasn't been that kind of example of a message song tied with a video in a long time, and the message is plastered across the video so strongly. Plus, they don't want her to leave empty-handed, because when it comes to acceptance speeches, she gives a great, echoing message and it guarantees a great on-air moment."

Anderson: "My favorite video out of all of these is the Pink one. Even it goes through very well-trod material in music videos that appears in every Lifetime movie, it gets the point across in nice way. I know the song 'Born This Way' has a message, but I'm not sure that video has a message unless it's about space travel. If I was a voter, I'd go for the Pink video, but of all of these, it seems like Katy's works the best, if only because she's never done anything like that before, whereas Eminem has a lot of videos about domestic violence. It's such a departure for Katy, who grew up so sheltered and is just now engaging with these kinds of issues that it feels like it could be a thing that could help be a culmination of her crazy-ass year."

Best Hip-Hop Video
Chris Brown (featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes), "Look at Me Now"
Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), "All of the Lights"
Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), "6 Foot, 7 Foot"
Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On"
Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"

Anderson: "I really, really like that Wayne video if only because I'm very charmed by the idea that Lil Wayne would go see 'Inception' and say, 'I gotta do that!' It seems like exactly how his brain works, 'I'll slow-motion fall into water!' But it seems like Nicki Minaj's to lose. That song and video have been weirdly sticky."

Best Female Video
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Beyoncé, "Run the World (Girls)"
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"

Drew: "This is probably the toughest category. You figure Adele will get Video of the Year and she could sweep this one as well. Katy's a contender, but Gaga won't get it and Nicki's not as a big in terms of the impact of her video. Beyoncé's video is very high-tech, high-energy and very well choreographed and stylized and is one of those ones they typically would honor. But it will be down to Katy or Adele, and even though her video was not the best one, I think they might try to do a sweep with Adele [to make a statement]."

Anderson: "I feel like Adele has to win one of these and this may be the one, just because among these people, she also feels like the outlier. Everybody else is very polished and in the mainstream, and I like an outlier."

Best Male Video
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Cee Lo Green, "F--- You"
Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie"
Justin Bieber, "U Smile"
Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), "All of the Lights"

Drew: "I think Cee Lo should win, even though Bruno is performing, and it's tempting to give him something. There's no denying the impact of Cee Lo's video, and you will get a hilarious moment of his accepting the award onstage."

Anderson: "Even though my favorite is Cee Lo, it seems like his window might have been missed, so I'm gonna give this to Eminem, although it's weird giving Best Male to a video that prominently features a woman. It's very well done and cinematic and it gets the point across."

'Conan The Barbarian': The Reviews Are In!

While critics prefer the remake to Arnold Schwarzenegger's original, reviews aren't glowing.
By Terri Schwartz

Jason Momoa in "Conan the Barbarian"
Photo: Lionsgate Entertainment

"Conan the Barbarian" isn't trying to pull any punches. From the beginning, the remake of the 1982 cult classic proclaims that its lead lives, loves, slays and is content. And critics are saying that's exactly what you get in theaters.

Reviews haven't necessarily been positive, with critics complaining about the script and the one-dimensional characters. But they seem to agree that Jason Momoa did a better job in the title role than Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the movie is fun — at least as a mindless summer blockbuster. It might not be worth spending the extra money to see the flick in 3-D, but the fighting is good and gory if that's what fans are looking for.

But don't let us tell you what to think. Before you head to theaters to watch "Conan the Barbarian," find out what the critics thought of "Conan the Barbarian" in our review round-up:

The Script
"With a script so pat and humor-free, Momoa has little to do but sneer and slice. The film informs us that Conan has the heart of a lion and 'the loyalty of a bloodhound,' but we get nary a sniff of that in this carnage fest. He's built like a tank, but Conan emotes like one, too." — Scott Bowles, USA Today

The Effects
"This 'Conan' plods along, regularly erupting in action scenes that make scant visual sense in two dimensions and none at all in 3-D. The few that stick out involve supernatural beasties; there's one ferocious battle against warriors made of sand that combines athletic parkour and digital effects to surprisingly exciting ends. Other than that, it's tame stuff, and there's little sense of the larger mythical stage the hero strides across." — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

The Remake
"The original 'Conan' was a sloppy, grandiose, unforgivable muckbath directed by the (I say the words lovingly) right-wing maniac John Milius. I watched it about four times to make sure it had no redeeming qualities. The reboot (re-sandal?) isn't good either, exactly. But it has a certain commitment to its cause, and by that I mean it supplies the necessary flayings, slayings, beheadings and, um, a be-nose-ing, all of it dancing to the tune of those amusingly stilted He-Man declaratives — King James Bible cadences applied to comic-book visions. It knows it's a B movie, and gets on with it." — Kyle Smith, The New York Post

The Schwarzenegger Connection
"In this dank ultimate-fighting challenge, Jason Momoa as Conan provides the only visual vivacity; he has an eye-catchingly sensuous face atop the requisite statuesque beefcake. Much more than Schwarzenegger in his early Teutonic-slab phase, Momoa nicely fulfills the law of Hollywood Darwinism: survival of the dishiest. Such is his sex appeal that he almost brings plausibility to the movie's silliest scene, when Conan tells Tamara, 'I live, I love, I slay, and I am content,' and the virgin instantly falls into his arms. Guys bringing their dates to this murky holocaust are advised not to try using Conan's credo as a pickup line." — Richard Corliss, Time

The Final Word
" 'Conan the Barbarian,' starring the excellent rippling chisel of Jason Momoa, is brutal, bloody beyond belief, and has no socially redeeming value. So it is with a certain amount of guilt that I say it's kind of a wicked blast to watch, especially if you're in the mood for some righteous revenge." — Betsy Sharkey, The Los Angeles Times

'True Blood' Star Warns Of The Curse Of 'The Caller'

Stephen Moyer and director Matthew Parkhill recall the eerie occurrences on the film's Puerto Rico set.
By Josh Wigler

Lady Gaga Looks To Top 2009 'Opera'-Like VMA Set

Creative director Laurieann Gibson talks Gaga's upcoming performance and male alter ego Jo Calderone.

Jo Calderone is an acquired taste. The male alter ego of Lady Gaga -- he first surfaced in Vogue Hommes Japan last year -- was last seen in the Laurieann Gibson-directed "Yoü and I" video, and the two didn't immediately hit it off.

"When I first met Jo, I didn't particularly like him. He calls me Ms. Laurie. And when he came to work on my 'Yoü and I' video, he was like, 'Ms. Laurie, how long am I going to have to shoot?' And I was like, 'Jo, you're going to have to wait just like everyone else.' "

Now, the two get along swimmingly. So does that mean he'll make an appearance at Sunday's Video Music Awards?

"Will Jo be at the VMAs? Hmmm, I'm trying to book him. I'm talking to his manager now, so I'll keep you posted," she told MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello.

She added: "He's not a diva; he's just a real dude. He's a little scary, but he's real."

Scary indeed. In the Vogue Hommes Japan issue, Calderone talked about his relationship with Mother Monster, saying, "[My occupation is] mechanic for my dad's business. This is the first time I've had my picture taken. Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken."

Gibson also talked up 2009's much-talked-about "Paparazzi" performance and joked about the excessive use of blood. "I thought it was an opera," she said. "I started out to create an opera. It was 'Paparazzi,' and it was the beginning of everyone seeing how crazy we are -- but crazy creative, and MTV [is] the most amazing platform to deliver that."

'Fright Night' Star Christopher Mintz-Plasse 'Gets' Vampire Appeal

'It was cool to play something evil and dark,' actor tells MTV News.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

The vampires in "Fright Night" might not sparkle in the sunlight, but star Christopher Mintz-Plasse still understands their appeal.

"Now I get it, why people play vampires," he told MTV News during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. "I'm like, there've been vampire movies. [But] that was really a lot of fun to do."

The crux of the issue, director Craig Gillespie explained, is that vampires are sexy. He made the argument that there are always vampire movies, but their popularity surges in waves. In the '80s, there was "The Lost Boys," in the '90s there was "Interview With the Vampire" and now it's "The Twilight Saga" keeping the vampire craze afloat.

The key was finding a good vampire to sit at the flick's center, and Gillespie said he always knew lead Colin Farrell would be good for the part. Farrell's character, Jerry, is dark but also has a humorous aspect, and Gillespie was impressed with Farrell's ability to walk that line. He knew it wouldn't be a hard sell either because Hollywood celebrities tend to be drawn to vampire films.

"It's one of those things that actors love to do, because you're getting to play sort of an iconic kind of character that has all this history with them. You get to have a lot of fun with it," Gillespie explained.

Mintz-Plasse certainly did. His character, Ed, gets (spoiler alert!) converted to a vampire in the movie, and Mintz-Plasse was psyched to whip out his inner bloodsucker.

"It was cool to play something evil and dark," he said.

Britney Spears' VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!

Promo reflects on Brit's career and inspirations while looking ahead to August 28 awards show.
By Christina Garibaldi

On Thursday (August 11), Britney Spears took over MTV when her Video Music Awards promo made its debut and MTV News was there when she filmed it.

The 30-second promo interlaces Spears' latest hit "I Wanna Go" with her own "Slave 4 U," Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and Madonna's "Everybody" as dancers dressed in Brit's most-famous outfits crowd around her. There's also a nod to Michael Jackson, with a poster on the wall that says "Billy Jean," in reference to MJ's hit "Billie Jean," and a dancer who mimics the late King of Pop's iconic moves. At the end of the promo, Spears stands in front of a wall that cryptically reads "A Tribute to Britney Spears" before the date of the VMAs — 8.28 — flashes on the screen.

Spears, whose "Till the World Ends" is nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography, filmed the promo last month in Miami, and MTV News was on the set for a behind-the-scenes look.

"The general concept of what we are going for is basically called 'The Muse Factory,' " director Jahai Brightly explained. "It's where all your favorite artists that are going to be at the Video Music Awards this year meet and explore their influences and inspirations."

The promo pulls from Spears' own musical influences from over the years, which is portrayed through the set design, wardrobe and, of course, through Brit herself.

In the promo, Spears pays homage to Madonna, Michael and Janet, whom she calls "the people I've grown up listening to and totally inspire [me]."

The promo doesn't just show the pop star's own musical icons; it also reminds us of what a musical force Spears is as well. "We are going to be exploring her past styles," Brightly said of Spears' classic looks. "In particular, past six styles that represent each of her albums, with the seventh one being the current incarnation."

Spears, whose outfit was designed to represent her current style, is dressed in a custom-made studded leather jacket, a shredded black T-shirt and her signature cutoff jean shorts. The promo begins with Spears paying homage to her latest album, Femme Fatale.

"I did the opening segment, where I'm at the mirror and I'm representing how many albums I've done, which is number seven," Spears said.

Spears then begins her journey down memory lane, where she is surrounded by dancers dressed up in some of her signature video looks, such as the flight-attendant costume in "Toxic" and her infamous red catsuit in "Oops! ... I Did It Again."

"I'm walking down a hallway and I'm seeing memorabilia of all my performances that I've done in the past," Spears said. "All my dancers are dressed up in my old outfits, which it's really cool."

What do you think of Britney's VMA promo? Let us know in the comments!

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

'The Avengers' Assemble, With Other Disney Stars, At D23

We recap all the sneak peeks and news to come out of the Mouse House's movie convention.
By Terri Schwartz, with additional reporting by Kara Warner

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth

"The Avengers" might not be assembling in theaters until May 4, 2012, but fans who attended Disney's D23 convention in Anaheim, California, over the weekend were lucky enough to catch the cast joining forces in person. MTV News was on the scene too, so stay tuned for our interviews with the stars. In the meantime, here's a little recap of the weekend's highlights:

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Cobie Smulders all showed up to unveil two new clips from the upcoming superhero flick. It was the first time the group has come together publicly since 2010's San Diego Comic-Con, and the first time "How I Met Your Mother" star Smulders has been part of the promotion for the movie.

Both of the clips shown focused on the showdown between the Avengers and "Thor" bad boy Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, AceShowBiz reports. The first showed Loki trapped in a high-tech chamber in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier, chatting with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. It is revealed that the chamber was actually created to hold the Hulk, but will hold Loki because he threatens Earth with war and "a force [he] can't control."

The second scene featured Downey's Tony Stark chatting with Loki in a private bar. "Let's do a head count," Loki says. "Two world class assassins" — the camera cuts to shots of Hawkeye and Black Widow — "a demigod" — cut to Thor — "a living legend who actually lives up to the legend" — a glimpse of Captain America. Stark responds by saying, "And you, big fella, you have managed to piss off every single one of them."

"I have an army," Loki says. Stark strikes back, "We have a Hulk."

When MTV caught up with Downey and Hemsworth after the panel, the two were coy about any scenes other than the ones that have been revealed. Downey joked that his favorite scene in the movie was the one "in which we don't reveal anything about the plot," but Hemsworth admitted that his favorite was already revealed.

"One of our first days was the whole assembly," he said, referring to the scene that was revealed at the end of "Captain America: The First Avenger." "That was pretty crazy. Not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whatever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and the Hulk. It's exciting."

Marvel wasn't the only Disney division doing some heavy lifting at D23, though. Pixar showed up with a slew of announcements, including some news about unannounced upcoming films, ScreenRant recapped.

First on the docket is "Brave," the Scotland-based animated adventure that hits in 2012. In addition to showing some new clips of the movie, Pixar also released a fleshed out plot synopsis that gives "Brave" more context. "Monsters University" received a summer 2013 release date slot, and Pixar also added two yet-untitled animated flicks to its upcoming releases. The first, directed by "Up" helmer Bob Peterson, speculates on what would happen if dinosaurs never became extinct and should hit theaters in fall 2013. The second, directed by "Monsters, Inc." 's Pete Doctor, explores inside the human mind and should be released at some point in 2014.

Also on the animation front, Shock Till You Drop reported on the "Frankenweenie" sizzle reel that was presented at the panel, which included footage from the flick, behind-the-scenes moments and interviews with the cast members. The title card for the movie was also unveiled, as well as the news that Danny Elfman will be composing the flick's score. "Frankenweenie" hits theaters October 5, 2012.

Jason Segel showed up with his "The Muppets" co-stars Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy to present two new clips from the movie, Entertainment Weekly reported. Clip number one featured an inside look at Kermit's house and showed that he's stuck in his '80s heyday, while clip number two showed off Muppets Rolf, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and Dr. Teeth trying to get the old Muppet Theater back in working order.

Not to be outdone, the cast and crew of "John Carter of Mars" presented four new clips from their upcoming sci-fi flick. Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins stood with director Andrew Stanton to show off the footage, EW recounted. The unfinished clips featured scenes where the titular Carter first lands on Mars, gets captured by Thark leader Tars Tarkas, has to battle his way out of a gladiatorial arena and tries to convince his lady love not to go through with her arranged marriage. Vulture said the clips had "a distinctly Pixar sense of humor," which can be attributed to Stanton's history with the animation company.

The last big presentation of D23 was for "Oz, the Great and Powerful," and though there was no finished footage, the panel did get to see James Franco's wizard and Michelle Williams' Glinda in costume. AceShowBiz said that a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, narrated by director Sam Raimi, displayed concept art for the Emerald City, munchkins and the yellow brick road. The movie is currently in production in Detroit and is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2013.
